Summary For The Year 2011

Yes, the club will no longer have any meeting as of this year, but we however will still continue to plan more activites in the future

Here's a list of what the new committee has done for the year:
1) Hot Ice Experiment
2) Moving (Rowing your Boat)
3) Brain Mashing time
4) Elephant Toothpaste

(The order of the experiment is not in any sequence)

Unfortunately we do not have a review on the elephant toothpaste due to the unavailability of recording device during the day

Most of our experiments are fun and you probably might not have thought of it, so here you go

All we ever wish is that our members enjoy every single meeting with a smile in their face

Do stay tuned for more updates!

Hot Ice Experiment

Prepare the materials and apparatus as below:
(a) Sodium Acetate
(b) A beaker
(c) bunsen burner & wire gauze
(d) distilled water
(e) ice
set up the apparatus as shown above

cool it down without disturbing it
this is what you can see after added crystal
  1. Put 2 tablespoon of sodium acetate in a flask.
  2. Heat gently and stir until the crystals of sodium acetate melt. Use a small amount of water to rinse down the inside of the flask.
  3. Remove the flask from the heat and let it cool slowly without disturbing it.
  4. Add one or two crystals (that’s right, it only take a single crystal) to the liquid in the flask. Don’t take your eyes off of the liquid as beautiful crystals begin to form inside the flask.
  5. Feel the flask… it’s warm! The process of crystallization gives off heat. It’s said to be exothermic.

Brain Mashing Time!

Yesterday, the Form 6 Science and Mathematics club have different plan instead of the ordinary mixing 2 or 3 reactants and BOOM! A reaction takes place

We instead let our members do some IQ questions which are considered tough, yet suprisingly our members managed to answer most of the questions correct.
After all there is the word "MATHEMATICS" in the club name and giving "SCIENCE" a rest was probably a good thing to do once in a while.

You might probably be wondering what sought of questions did we gave the members to do, here is a few:
1. Sequence of numbers
1 11 21 1211 111221
What will be the next one in the above sequence?

2. Divide the clock’s face into three equal parts exactly with two lines. Therefore the sum of the numbers in the three equal parts should be same.

3.  Some months have 30 days, some months have 31 days, how many months have 28 days?

Aren't those questions tough? I bet it is

Now picture time :)

Questions on the board, hard to read making it harder for them to answer!
Our secretary working with our teacher advisor, Pn.Chan!
The "Pro's" paper

Hmmm....
A : Can you get it?
B : Let me try! (HITTING THE CALCULATOR BUTTONS)
Our V.President showing our members how to solve the question

Cool!
Members laughing = Good Thing? Yup
Solving more problems
Feeling the intensity?
All 4 have different pose?
Thinking face
"This is too easy"
"haha, haha, haha"(staring at the questions)
Our committe are also solving it with them
President explaining giving a review on some questions!
ooh! Everyone wondering what the answer will be
The mini-discussion
Further explanation needed? maybe not

That's all

And another thing,

Good Luck To All Members in Their Upcoming Exam!

GOOD LUCK

Moving (ROWING) Your Boat

It is 2 weeks after the AGM and yet we have another experiment, this time it is not burning those chemicals or getting explosions here and there, nor is it touching those liquids that would turn into crystal,

Well it was a safer and yet interesting experiment to conduct

Here's a video for you to have a rough idea

Basically the theory behind this experiment is quite simple, it revolves around surface tension of the water
Since water has a very high surface tension, putting a soap into the water will reduce the surface tension. So water molecules move from areas of low surface tension to areas of high surface tension hence the boat is pulled towards areas of high surface tension by the water in front of the boat.
Now time for the pictures to do the talking

Introducing the experiment :D

Listening to briefing
(can't wait to try ^_^)

Let's fill it up

 We gonna start

Funny shapes

We clearly had a lot of fun trying out different shape and sizes!

Do stay tuned for more updates!
